If a girl is raped, everyone says at first ,’’Oh my god! This should not have happened to this girl. God should be merciful to this girl. The rapist should be punished. The rapist should be hanged.” We have been habituated to listening to these expressions. The people who say those words, would not protest/ say a word, if they witness rape. They will stand like statues. They will act as if nothing has happened.
On the other hand, if a girl smokes in front of people ,people would not waste a second to criticize that girl. That time, they will have a thousand things to say. This is the real character/nature of our society .
After some days of an incident of rape, most of the people will forget the incident completely. That time, they will again start criticizing that girl. They also get into a debate on the matter in a nearby tea stall, coffee shop or daily shop. They will act as if a big responsibility has been given to them, to judge the girl and determine what the girl should do or should not do. This time they wouldn’t really like to remember the tragedy/ what she went through
Rather, they would think or flippantly say ,”It was the girl’s fault.” Many questions would be made about the girl’s behavior ,character, way of dressing and friends. Some will say, “She should not wear those kind of dresses.” These unsolicited and insensitive remarks would break the rape survivor internally, but who cares! Most of the people say , “Women should be in her limits.” Why? Do men have any limits in this society? If a man has no limits, why are these strictures only for women? And what exactly is meant by limit? If a women wears a saree and goes for a walk at night, can anyone give a 100% guarantee that her modesty wouldn’t be outraged? A woman has the same right to live in this society like a man. But the society is fully male dominated. From the ancient era ,one society has always made a limit for women and men full freedom.
We always talk about the modern society. But we don’t know the meaning of the word ‘modern’. ‘Modern’ does not mean a new hair style, new dress or a speaking style and a new type of behavior.You have to be modern in your mentality. If our mentality becomes modern the whole society will become a modern society. For this, we have to change our entire mentality. We should leave the same space for women like men. If we want to develop our society, men and women both are equally needed.Both have to come with their powerful minds to change this society to start a new era.We should support each other in every bit of work. We, man and woman, are interdependent .We should cooperate with each other. In this way, we can develop a modern society.
